CUTTING & ENGRAVING

Wood, Plywood, MDF and Other Wood Based Products

Wood and other wood based products are a perfect fit for lasering.  Wood products engrave and cut excellently!

For best results in plywood and MDF ensure you are purchasing ones for INTERIOR use.  These typically use a PVA based glue which is much easier for the laser to cut than exterior rated glues.

Carbon (think charred wood) which is created when laser cutting wood products, reflects laser light; cutting at a higher power level does not necessarily allow a higher cutting speed and may reduce edge quality.

Acrylic

Acrylics were made to be laser cut!  Acrylics cut and engrave excellently!

There are two different types of acrylic sheet goods commonly available: extruded and cast.  Extruded acrylics are less expensive and more brittle than their cast counterparts.  When engraving extruded acrylic, the engraving itself will be relatively shiny and will be the same color as the acrylic.  For that cool ‘frosted’ look to your engravings, you must use cast acrylic.

Acrylic can be cut at high speed, however the faster you go, the more opaque and ‘frosted’ the edge will look.  With less speed, the laser will impart more heat into the acrylic edge and thus melt it together in a very controlled way allowing near perfect ‘flame polished’ looking edges with no post processing.

Cloth & Fabrics

Did you know that lasers are extensively in the garment industry?

Please refer to the Materials Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for specifics on what your fabric is made from to ensure safety.

Most fabrics cut and can be engraved excellently.  Some fabrics will even have their laser cut edges automatically bonded together to prevent unraveling.  Experimentation on your particular fabric is a must to ensure the highest cut quality.

Pro Tip: Blue jeans can be engraved with stunning results!
